Barclays

United Kingdom

Barclays followed HSBC in leaving the Net Zero Banking Alliance at the start of August. NZBA member banks voted to abandon the alliance’s headline commitment to align finance with 1.5ºC earlier this year.

ANZ

Australia

BankTrack and partners submitted a complaint to ANZ's in-house grievance mechanism, alleging that the bank did not conduct adequate human rights checks when deciding to finance Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN). PLN plans to expand coal power until 2034, despite the severe public health impacts linked to its coal power plants.

Bank Mandiri

Indonesia

TuK INDONESIA has taken Bank Mandiri to court, demanding a halt to financing of palm oil companies linked to environmental and human rights abuses. In June, BankTrack and others supported the lawsuit with an amicus curiae letters. On July 17, 2025, the South Jakarta District Court dismissed the case on formal grounds. TuK INDONESIA plans to appeal.

Banco Santander

Spain

Back Santander is backtracking on its fossil fuel commitments. In a policy update from July 2025, the Spanish bank included dangerous new exceptions to its 2030 coal phase-out targets. Besides, it also removed previous corporate finance restrictions for financing some oil and coal companies.
