De beperkte reikwijdte van maatschappelijk verantwoord beleggen
|
M. Kokke, R. van Os
Feb 02, 2009 - De financiële wereld verkeert in zwaar weer.
Ignoring the crisis? How Further GATS Liberalisation Impacts the Financial and Food Crisis
|
M. Vander Stichele
Jun 10, 2008 - In Spring 2008, during efforts to finalise the WTO negotiations on agriculture and market access for non-agricultural goods (NAMA), the European Union (EU) and the United States (US) have insisted that commitments on further liberalisation of trade in services in WTO General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) be part of any Doha negotiation deal that comes out. Previous experience of negotiations under GATS, including on the 'collective request' process, and free trade agreements (FTAs), have shown that the EU, the US, as well as Canada, are very keen to get more commitments in financial services. However, a deal that further liberalises financial services could exacerbate the likelihood of future crises, not only in the financial markets but also the food markets.
GATS Negotiations in Financial Services
|
M. Vander Stichele
May 05, 2006 - In the process of the GATS negotiations, the EU has been making requests to many developing countries to liberalise its financial services sectors. Liberalisation under GATS means more than market opening for services by foreign financial firms (banks, insurance companies, pension fund management, mutual funds, etc.). GATS is mainly about giving foreign service providers, including the financial industry, more freedom to invest so that foreign services can be provided.

Critical Issues in the Financial Industry
|
M. Vander Stichele
Apr 16, 2005 - This SOMO report critically analyses the functioning and regulation of banks, insurance companies and other firms in the financial industry. Although the financial industry is a crucial player in corporate globalisation, e.g. through its “investment banking”, civil society scantly monitors the private financial sector. This report aims at explaining the terms used in the private financial sector and increasing the understanding of its functioning. More specifically, the report focuses on trends, structures, strategies, regulations and corporate social responsibility initiatives at the international level. The analysis clearly identifies “critical issues” that reveal the negative effects of the financial industry on society, developing countries, poverty eradication, and sustainable development.
