Veolia is a large French company that operates on a global scale. The company is operating in several areas such as water supply and water management, waste management, energy and transport services.
Veolia Transport, is a leading partner in the CityPass consortium, contracted to build a light rail tramway system linking west Jerusalem to illegal Jewish Settlements such as Pisgat Ze'ev, French Hill, Neve Ya'akov and Gilo in occupied East Jerusalem. Once operational, the rail system will help to cement Israel's hold on occupied East Jerusalem and tie the illegal settlements even more firmly into the state of Israel. The railway will make the settlements and their expansion more viable - easing the traffic jams on existing settler-only roads that had begun to threaten the sustainability of the settlement projects.
Veolia also operates the Tovlan Landfill in the occupied Jordan valley, which buries waste from Israel and illegal Israeli settlements on Palestinian land and bus routes to Israeli settlements in the West Bank.
As part of the rapidly emerging global movement for boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israeli until it complies with international law, a number of private banks, state pension funds and local governments have been successfully persuaded to cease their involvement with Veolia. In January 2009, Veolia lost a €3.5bn contract with Stockholm City Council and reports have already begun to emerge that Veolia wishes to cease its involvement in the Jerusalem Light Rail project.
