Stop the Agua Zarca Dam
As of 11am Sep 20th, Judge Reyes Lissien Knight has sentenced Berta Caceres to prison to await her trial, if she does not turn herself in, a warrant will be issued for her arrest. Further sentencing for Tomas and Aureliano include restricted access to Rio Blanco and mandatory court check-ins every two weeks. The Judge also issued a order to evict the blockade in Rio Blanco.
An appeal will be filed by Weds Sep 25th. We need international protest. It is imperative we keep raising our voices, spread this petition now!
For five months, the Lenca community has blockaded their road against the construction of the Agua Zarca dam on their sacred river. The dam project violates International Labor Organization Convention 169 on the right of indigenous peoples to free, prior, and informed consent before "development" projects can commence on their territories. US-funded Honduran soldiers and company goons have killed, shot, slashed with machetes, kidnapped, and terrorized members of the 400-family Rio Blanco community.
The Honduran government and DESA has also launched a campaign to frame leaders of COPINH as criminals, bringing them to court on charges of being violent and armed usurpers of land. As Sep 20th they have been sentenced for these charges, including an order to evict in Rio Blanco. We know Honduran government cares deeply about international opinion. We ask people to sign a petition to President Porfirio Lobo and the Judge in the politicized trial, to:
